Support Local with GetAssist

June 25, 2015/in Blog, Business, Community /by GetAssist Author

Local businesses may seem old-fashioned—and many are. But these provocative brick-and-mortar establishments are creating sorcery and magic in our hometown communities; they contribute local character and prosperity in an ever-increasing homogenized world. These one-of-a-kind businesses with distinctive character contribute to more than just a proud legacy. They generate dramatically greater local economic activity than procurement from a chain business—and they’re gaining ground over retail chains and big box stores all across North America.

Organizations around the country are working to raise awareness of the importance of shopping local first so that independent businesses survive and thrive, and communities are enriched and sustained. Since 2002, a number of studies have documented the positive impact and greater economic return to local economies than that of the big chains and box stores. The ‘buy local first’ initiative, pushed by these independent organizations, is growing public interest, and there are no signs of it slowing down.

GetAssist supports local, and makes efforts to provide small business owners with everything they need for success. It’s our goal to provide you with all the information you need to shop local. In Phoenix, June 27-July 5, we’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of National Independents Week! Join the hundreds of businesses, and thousands of consumers who participate in this statewide celebration by taking the “support local” pledge, or shopping at a participating Local First Arizona business.

Why shop at a locally owned business first, you ask? Here are 5 reasons:

1. Community Well-Being

Locally owned businesses connect community to neighbor—and neighbor to community. They pioneer vibrant town centers, contribute to local causes, and, simply put, they create more jobs locally.

2. Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy

Compared to chain stores, locally owned businesses recirculate a substantially greater proportion of their revenue back into the local economy, benefitting the people who live in the community and who directly feel the impact.

3. Environmental Sustainability

Local stores require comparatively little infrastructure. Because of this, they promote vibrant, compact, walkable town centers. This, in turn, reduces sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution.

4. Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship fuels America’s economic prosperity. It serves as a key means for families to move out of low-wage jobs and into the middle class as aspiring entrepreneurs turn their talents and passions into an enterprise of their own.

5. Product Diversity

Chains and box stores select products based on a national sales plan. Small businesses, however, select products based on their own interests and the needs of their local customers. This guarantees a much broader range of product choices.

Get the word out with GetAssist

Supporting local businesses does more than keep money in the community and cut down on pollution. It’s the stronghold… the belief… in our neighbors, our communities and the dream of success. Fighting for small business success equals championing entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs have a profound impact on our lives, and add to the vitality of our communities. Support local is the secret sauce to a simmering economy.
